THE DIAMOND CLONE: MOISSANITE INFORMATION AND FACTS

The diamond clone, or the Moissanite, has deceived many people around the world, and that may be one of the reasons why we are all dazzled by a diamond, by its brilliance and its crystallinity. But we must be careful with imitations and stones whose similarity is such that it can be confused, and this is the case of the Moissanite stone, which is also, like the diamond, in gem category.

Every woman’s dream is that her engagement ring will have a big shiny stone, or that her wedding ring will have a beautiful shiny detail, preferably, that it will be a very nice and shiny diamond, that it will arouse everyone’s envy and that it will be a symbol of pride and satisfaction when finding the couple who perfectly understands the taste and class of a piece. A diamond is everyone’s dream.

Like the diamond, Moissanite is a mineral that belongs to the group of semi-metals and non-metals, it’s considered a rare mineral and its chemical formula is SiC, formerly known as silicon carbide (it was synthesized in laboratories).

Where does the Diamond Clone or Moissanite come from?

The Diamond Clone was discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan in Devil’s Canyon, Arizona (USA), but it was not until 1904 that it was identified as silicon carbide (SiC). Later it received the name of Moissanite in honor of the person who discovered it (Moissan).

The similarity it has with diamond is the way in which the covalent bonds are presented, which are strong and very similar to those you can actually see on a regular diamond, which allows the Moissanite to withstand very high pressures. Another similarity it has with diamond is that its colors are measured under the same scale of color graduation I-J-K.

Even another similarity that Moissanite has with diamond is its use in jewelry as a gem, it’s also used in high pressure experiments, it’s also used for electronic and thermal applications, thanks to its high chemical conductivity.

About Moissanite

There is a reason why the Moissanite is called the Diamond Clone, and that is because in many respects it competes very closely with the diamond, for its many similarities in both everyday and scientific uses, is a very tough competition but certainly, for costs, is preferred by many.

Although it has many similarities with diamond, it has lower costs, and becomes the preferred use; in fact, it is expected that in the future it will play a greater role in high power electronic devices and play an important role in the design of new technologies.

However, since the advent of this carbide, which is exclusively produced by C3 Inc., which owns the patent, it has created much excitement since its public appearance in the 1990s.

Introduction of moissanite to the market

When the diamond clone (Moissanita) was first introduced to the market, it received a great deal of publicity, thanks to the fact that it was capable of deceiving even the most skilled and expert jewelers, whose thought and ignorance would indicate that what it was examining would turn out to be a real diamond.

From the beginning, it brought problems of identification and differentiation, especially because no significant differences were identified. But like everything that is unknown, it may have gone unnoticed more than once.

The clone of the diamond (the Moissanite), was able to deceive even the most expert, at the time of being exposed to a probe ended was not detected, this because its similarity in density to the diamond, could be a perfect camouflage, so that hides its identity.

A real challenge for the diamond market, imagine such a good copy of something that makes you doubt that if both are copies or both are true, that’s why it’s considered the diamond clone.

But there is a difference between the Diamond clone and the original, because both have radically different optical properties. In other words, an expert detailer, looking at both stones, might be able to conclude which of the two gems is the diamond and which is the moissanite.

Differences between diamond and moissanite

But in spite of everything, there are real differences between the two stones, and now we’ll be able to know:

  • Color

It will never be possible to reproduce a pure white Moissanite, in other words, without visible defects to a 10x magnified lens both internally and externally, is clearly a disadvantage against the diamond that unlike if it can be achieved with a fairly perfect level of purity. However, the color grading scale used is the same as for diamonds, so as a gem it deserves the same treatment and consideration.

  • Cost

Although the rights of creation belong to a single company and it’s they who, with their patent, reproduce and distribute them, their cost is much lower than the cost of a real diamond, so you can say that you do not trust if the stone in a very large and in a jewelry store costs less than in another, it may be that instead of a diamond you are selling the diamond clone, a moissanita.

Although this is a gemstone made and reproduced from a synthetic origin and yet falls into the categories of precious gems capable of having the honor of being displayed in jewelry shops in pieces of high quality and brilliance, today there are sold and its cost is less than that of a natural diamond so it ends up being a good choice of piece of jewelry to give away.

The beauty of the moissanite

The Moissanita are really precious stones and they have their own pleasure and charm, despite being the clone of the diamond, their place among the gems has been thanks to their beauty, so it is not a shame that you buy this accessory, however you should be very attentive to sales, as I mentioned before, do not be fooled if in a jewelry store a similar stone at a lower cost is offered as a real diamond, is a deception of which you should be aware, taking into account that natural diamonds are really expensive.

Without a doubt it is a stone that possesses its own brilliance capable of awakening true passions and loves with the expression this is what I was really looking for or this is what I have always dreamed of.

We hope that the advances will allow the diamond clone or Moissanite, as a gemstone, to play a significant and leading role in the advances of technology allowing us to have better products at a lower price.

Every woman’s dream is that her engagement ring will have a shiny stone, the diamond is everyone’s dream.
